To The Reverend Dr. Swift Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJKK LLMMCCNN

WITH A PRESENT OF A PAPER BOOK FINELY BOUND ON HIS BIRTH DAY NOV BY JOHN EARL OF ORRERYA
-
To thee dear Swift these spotless leaves I sendB
Small is the present but sincere the friendB
Think not so poor a book below thy careC
Who knows the price that thou canst make it bearC
Tho' tawdry now and like Tyrilla's faceD
The specious front shines out with borrow'd graceD
Tho' pasteboards glitt'ring like a tinsell'd coatE
A rasa tabula within denoteE
Yet if a venal and corrupted ageF
And modern vices should provoke thy rageF
If warn'd once more by their impending fateG
A sinking country and an injur'd stateG
Thy great assistance should again demandH
And call forth reason to defend the landH
Then shall we view these sheets with glad surpriseI
Inspir'd with thought and speaking to our eyesI
Each vacant space shall then enrich'd dispenseJ
True force of eloquence and nervous senseJ
Inform the judgment animate the heartK
And sacred rules of policy impartK
The spangled cov'ring bright with splendid oreL
Shall cheat the sight with empty show no moreL
But lead us inward to those golden minesM
Where all thy soul in native lustre shinesM
So when the eye surveys some lovely fairC
With bloom of beauty graced with shape and airC
How is the rapture heighten'd when we findN
Her form excell'd by her celestial mindN
