To The Citizens[1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDDDDDDDEEDDFFGG DDDDDDHIBBBBBDDD

And shall the Patriot who maintain'd your causeA
From future ages only meet applauseB
Shall he who timely rose t'his country's aidC
By her own sons her guardians be betray'dC
Did heathen virtues in your hearts resideD
These wretches had been damn'd for parricideD
Should you behold whilst dreadful armies threatD
The sure destruction of an injured stateD
Some hero with superior virtue bless'dD
Avert their rage and succour the distress'dD
Inspired with love of glorious libertyD
Do wonders to preserve his country freeD
He like the guardian shepherd stands and theyE
Like lions spoil'd of their expected preyE
Each urging in his rage the deadly dartD
Resolved to pierce the generous hero's heartD
Struck with the sight your souls would swell with griefF
And dare ten thousand deaths to his reliefF
But if the people he preserved should cryG
He went too far and he deserved to dieG
Would not your soul such treachery detestD
And indignation boil within your breastD
Would not you wish that wretched state preservedD
To feel the tenfold ruin they deservedD
If then oppression has not quite subduedD
At once your prudence and your gratitudeD
If you yourselves conspire not your undoingH
And don't deserve and won't draw down your ruinI
If yet to virtue you have some pretenceB
If yet ye are not lost to common senseB
Assist your patriot in your own defenceB
That stupid cant he went too far despiseB
And know that to be brave is to be wiseB
Think how he struggled for your libertyD
And give him freedom whilst yourselves are freeD
