To Janus, On New Year's Day, 1726 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGHIIDDEE JJKLMMCCNN

Two faced Janus god of TimeA
Be my Phoebus while I rhymeA
To oblige your crony SwiftB
Bring our dame a new year's giftB
She has got but half a faceC
Janus since thou hast a braceC
To my lady once be kindD
Give her half thy face behindD
God of Time if you be wiseE
Look not with your future eyesE
What imports thy forward sightF
Well if you could lose it quiteF
Can you take delight in viewingG
This poor Isle's approaching ruinH
When thy retrospection vastI
Sees the glorious ages pastI
Happy nation were we blindD
Or had only eyes behindD
Drown your morals madam criesE
I'll have none but forward eyesE
Prudes decay'd about may tackJ
Strain their necks with looking backJ
Give me time when coming onK
Who regards him when he's goneL
By the Dean though gravely toldM
New years help to make me oldM
Yet I find a new year's laceC
Burnishes an old year's faceC
Give me velvet and quadrilleN
I'll have youth and beauty stillN
