To Betty, The Grisette Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEFGGHHIIJJKK FFLLAAFFMMNNOOPP

Queen of wit and beauty BettyA
Never may the Muse forget yeA
How thy face charms every shepherdB
Spotted over like a leopardB
And thy freckled neck display'dC
Envy breeds in every maidC
Like a fly blown cake of tallowD
Or on parchment ink turn'd yellowD
Or a tawny speckled pippinE
Shrivell'd with a winter's keepingF
And thy beauty thus dispatch'dG
Let me praise thy wit unmatch'dG
Sets of phrases cut and dryH
Evermore thy tongue supplyH
And thy memory is loadedI
With old scraps from plays explodedI
Stock'd with repartees and jokesJ
Suited to all Christian folksJ
Shreds of wit and senseless rhymesK
Blunder'd out a thousand timesK
Nor wilt thou of gifts be sparingF
Which can ne'er be worse for wearingF
Picking wit among collegiansL
In the playhouse upper regionsL
Where in the eighteen penny galleryA
Irish nymphs learn Irish railleryA
But thy merit is thy failingF
And thy raillery is railingF
Thus with talents well enduedM
To be scurrilous and rudeM
When you pertly raise your snoutN
Fleer and gibe and laugh and floutN
This among Hibernian assesO
For sheer wit and humour passesO
Thus indulgent Chloe bitP
Swears you have a world of witP
