The Parson's Case Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGHIJKKLL MMNNOOPPQQRRSSTF

That you friend Marcus like a stoicA
Can wish to die in strains heroicA
No real fortitude impliesB
Yet all must own thy wish is wiseB
Thy curate's place thy fruitful wifeC
Thy busy drudging scene of lifeC
Thy insolent illiterate vicarD
Thy want of all consoling liquorD
Thy threadbare gown thy cassock rentE
Thy credit sunk thy money spentE
Thy week made up of fasting daysF
Thy grate unconscious of a blazeF
And to complete thy other cursesG
The quarterly demands of nursesH
Are ills you wisely wish to leaveI
And fly for refuge to the graveJ
And O what virtue you expressK
In wishing such afflictions lessK
But now should Fortune shift the sceneL
And make thy curateship a deanL
Or some rich benefice provideM
To pamper luxury and prideM
With labour small and income greatN
With chariot less for use than stateN
With swelling scarf and glossy gownO
And license to reside in townO
To shine where all the gay resortP
At concerts coffee house or courtP
And weekly persecute his graceQ
With visits or to beg a placeQ
With underlings thy flock to teachR
With no desire to pray or preachR
With haughty spouse in vesture fineS
With plenteous meals and generous wineS
Wouldst thou not wish in so much easeT
Thy years as numerous as thy daysF
