The Dean-s Answer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIJKK EELLMMNN

The nymph who wrote this in an amorous fitA
I cannot but envy the pride of her witA
Which thus she will venture profusely to throwB
On so mean a design and a subject so lowB
For mean's her design and her subject as meanC
The first but a rebus the last but a deanC
A dean's but a parson and what is a rebusD
A thing never known to the Muses or PhoebusD
The corruption of verse for when all is doneE
It is but a paraphrase made on a punE
But a genius like hers no subject can stifleF
It shows and discovers itself through a trifleF
By reading this trifle I quickly beganG
To find her a great wit but the dean a small manG
Rich ladies will furnish their garrets with stuffH
Which others for mantuas would think fine enoughH
So the wit that is lavishly thrown away hereI
Might furnish a second rate poet a yearJ
Thus much for the verse we proceed to the nextK
Where the nymph has entirely forsaken her textK
Her fine panegyrics are quite out of seasonE
And what she describes to be merit is treasonE
The changes which faction has made in the stateL
Have put the dean's politics quite out of dateL
Now no one regards what he utters with freedomM
And should he write pamphlets no great man would read 'emM
And should want or desert stand in need of his aidN
This racer would prove but a dull founder'd jadeN
