ON HIS SUCCESSES IN IRELANDA
-
-
To purchase kingdoms and to buy renownB
Are arts peculiar to dissembling FranceC
You mighty monarch nobler actions crownB
And solid virtue does your name advanceC
-
Your matchless courage with your prudence joinsD
The glorious structure of your fame to raiseE
With its own light your dazzling glory shinesF
And into adoration turns our praiseE
-
Had you by dull succession gain'd your crownB
Cowards are monarchs by that title madeG
Part of your merit Chance would call her ownH
And half your virtues had been lost in shadeG
-
But now your worth its just reward shall haveI
What trophies and what triumphs are your dueJ
Who could so well a dying nation saveK
At once deserve a crown and gain it tooJ
-
You saw how near we were to ruin broughtL
You saw th'impetuous torrent rolling onM
And timely on the coming danger thoughtL
Which we could neither obviate nor shunN
-
Britannia stripp'd of her sole guard the lawsO
Ready to fall Rome's bloody sacrificeP
You straight stepp'd in and from the monster's jawsO
Did bravely snatch the lovely helpless prizeQ
-
Nor this is all as glorious is the careR
To preserve conquests as at first to gainS
In this your virtue claims a double shareR
Which what it bravely won does well maintainS
-
Your arm has now your rightful title show'dT
An arm on which all Europe's hopes dependU
To which they look as to some guardian GodV
That must their doubtful liberty defendU
-
Amazed thy action at the Boyne we seeW
When Schomberg started at the vast designX
The boundless glory all redounds to theeW
The impulse the fight th'event were wholly thineX
-
The brave attempt does all our foes disarmY
You need but now give orders and commandZ
Your name shall the remaining work performA2
And spare the labour of your conquering handZ
-
France does in vain her feeble arts applyB2
To interrupt the fortune of your courseC2
Your influence does the vain attacks defyB2
Of secret malice or of open forceC2
-
Boldly we hence the brave commencement dateD2
Of glorious deeds that must all tongues employE2
William's the pledge and earnest given by fateD2
Of England's glory and her lasting joyE2
