Louisa To Strephon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJ KKLLBBMMNNOOPPQRSSTT UUVV

Ah Strephon how can you despiseA
Her who without thy pity diesA
To Strephon I have still been trueB
And of as noble blood as youB
Fair issue of the genial bedC
A virgin in thy bosom bredC
Embraced thee closer than a wifeD
When thee I leave I leave my lifeD
Why should my shepherd take amissE
That oft I wake thee with a kissE
Yet you of every kiss complainF
Ah is not love a pleasing painF
A pain which every happy nightG
You cure with ease and with delightG
With pleasure as the poet singsH
Too great for mortals less than kingsH
Chloe when on thy breast I lieI
Observes me with revengeful eyeI
If Chloe o'er thy heart prevailsJ
She'll tear me with her desperate nailsJ
And with relentless hands destroyK
The tender pledges of our joyK
Nor have I bred a spurious raceL
They all were born from thy embraceL
Consider Strephon what you doB
For should I die for love of youB
I'll haunt thy dreams a bloodless ghostM
And all my kin a numerous hostM
Who down direct our lineage bringN
From victors o'er the Memphian kingN
Renown'd in sieges and campaignsO
Who never fled the bloody plainsO
Who in tempestuous seas can sportP
And scorn the pleasures of a courtP
From whom great Sylla found his doomQ
Who scourged to death that scourge of RomeR
Shall on thee take a vengeance direS
Thou like Alcides shalt expireS
When his envenom'd shirt he woreT
And skin and flesh in pieces toreT
Nor less that shirt my rival's giftU
Cut from the piece that made her shiftU
Shall in thy dearest blood be dyedV
And make thee tear thy tainted hideV
