The Dean would visit Market HillA
Our invitation was but slightB
I said Why let him if he willA
And so I bade Sir Arthur writeB
-
His manners would not let him waitC
Lest we should think ourselves neglectedD
And so we see him at our gateC
Three days before he was expectedD
-
After a week a month a quarterE
And day succeeding after dayF
Says not a word of his departureE
Though not a soul would have him stayF
-
I've said enough to make him blushG
Methinks or else the devil's in'tH
But he cares not for it a rushG
Nor for my life will take the hintI
-
But you my dear may let him knowJ
In civil language if he staysK
How deep and foul the roads may growJ
And that he may command the chaiseK
-
Or you may say My wife intendsL
Though I should be exceeding proudM
This winter to invite some friendsL
And sir I know you hate a crowdM
-
Or Mr Dean I should with joyN
Beg you would here continue stillA
But we must go to AghnecloyA
Or Mr Moore will take it illA
-
The house accounts are daily risingO
So much his stay doth swell the billsP
My dearest life it is surprisingO
How much he eats how much he swillsP
-
His brace of puppies how they stuffQ
And they must have three meals a dayF
Yet never think they get enoughQ
His horses too eat all our hayF
-
O if I could how I would maulA
His tallow face and wainscot pawsP
His beetle brows and eyes of wallA
And make him soon give up the causeP
-
Must I be every moment chidF
With Skinnybonia Snipe and LeanR
O that I could but once be ridF
Of this insulting tyrant DeanR
