Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDDEFGGHHIIJJKKLM NNOOPPQQRRSTUUVVWWXX YYZZA2P

TRANSLATED BY DR DUNKINA
-
Lo from the top of yonder cliff that shroudsB
Its airy head amid the azure cloudsB
Hangs a huge fragment destitute of propsC
Prone on the wave the rocky ruin dropsC
With hoarse rebuff the swelling seas reboundD
From shore to shore the rocks return the soundD
The dreadful murmur Heaven's high convex cleavesE
And Neptune shrinks beneath his subject wavesF
For long the whirling winds and beating tidesG
Had scoop'd a vault into its nether sidesG
Now yields the base the summits nod now urgeH
Their headlong course and lash the sounding surgeH
Not louder noise could shake the guilty worldI
When Jove heap'd mountains upon mountains hurl'dI
Retorting Pelion from his dread abodeJ
To crush Earth's rebel sons beneath the loadJ
Oft too with hideous yawn the cavern wideK
Presents an orifice on either sideK
A dismal orifice from sea to seaL
Extended pervious to the God of DayM
Uncouthly join'd the rocks stupendous formN
An arch the ruin of a future stormN
High on the cliff their nests the woodquests makeO
And sea calves stable in the oozy lakeO
But when bleak Winter with his sullen trainP
Awakes the winds to vex the watery plainP
When o'er the craggy steep without controlQ
Big with the blast the raging billows rollQ
Not towns beleaguer'd not the flaming brandR
Darted from Heaven by Jove's avenging handR
Oft as on impious men his wrath he poursS
Humbles their pride and blasts their gilded towersT
Equal the tumult of this wild uproarU
Waves rush o'er waves rebellows shore to shoreU
The neighbouring race though wont to brave the shocksV
Of angry seas and run along the rocksV
Now pale with terror while the ocean foamsW
Fly far and wide nor trust their native homesW
The goats while pendent from the mountain topX
The wither'd herb improvident they cropX
Wash'd down the precipice with sudden sweepY
Leave their sweet lives beneath th'unfathom'd deepY
The frighted fisher with desponding eyesZ
Though safe yet trembling in the harbour liesZ
Nor hoping to behold the skies sereneA2
Wearies with vows the monarch of the mainP
