TO THE LORD TREASURER OXFORDA

Atlas we read in ancient songC
Was so exceeding tall and strongC
He bore the skies upon his backD
Just as the pedler does his packD
But as the pedler overpress'dA
Unloads upon a stall to restA
Or when he can no longer standA
Desires a friend to lend a handA
So Atlas lest the ponderous spheresE
Should sink and fall about his earsE
Got Hercules to bear the pileF
That he might sit and rest awhileF
Yet Hercules was not so strongC
Nor could have borne it half so longC
Great statesmen are in this conditionG
And Atlas is a politicianG
A premier minister of stateA
Alcides one of second rateA
Suppose then Atlas ne'er so wiseH
Yet when the weight of kingdoms liesH
Too long upon his single shouldersI
Sink down he must or find upholdersI
