Ireland is now our royal careA
We lately fix'd our viceroy thereA
How near was she to be undoneB
Till pious love inspired her sonB
What cannot our vicegerent doC
As poet and as patriot tooC
Let his success our subjects swayD
Our inspirations to obeyD
And follow where he leads the wayD
Then study to correct your tasteE
Nor beaten paths be longer tracedE
No simile shall be begunB
With rising or with setting sunB
And let the secret head of NileF
Be ever banish'd from your isleF
When wretched lovers live on airA
I beg you'll the chameleon spareA
And when you'd make a hero granderG
Forget he's like a salamanderG
No son of mine shall dare to sayD
Aurora usher'd in the dayD
Or ever name the milky wayD
You all agree I make no doubtH
Elijah's mantle is worn outH
The bird of Jove shall toil no moreI
To teach the humble wren to soarI
Your tragic heroes shall not rantJ
Nor shepherds use poetic cantJ
Simplicity alone can graceK
The manners of the rural raceK
Theocritus and Philips beL
Your guides to true simplicityL
When Damon's soul shall take its flightM
Though poets have the second sightM
They shall not see a trail of lightM
Nor shall the vapours upwards riseN
Nor a new star adorn the skiesN
For who can hope to place one thereA
As glorious as Belinda's hairA
Yet if his name you'd eternizeN
And must exalt him to the skiesN
Without a star this may be doneB
So Tickell mourn'd his AddisonB
If Anna's happy reign you praiseN
Pray not a word of halcyon daysN
Nor let my votaries show their skillO
In aping lines from Cooper's HillO
For know I cannot bear to hearP
The mimicry of deep yet clearQ
Whene'er my viceroy is address'dR
Against the phoenix I protestR
When poets soar in youthful strainsN
No Phaethon to hold the reinsN
When you describe a lovely girlS
No lips of coral teeth of pearlS
Cupid shall ne'er mistake anotherG
However beauteous for his motherG
Nor shall his darts at random flyT
From magazine in Celia's eyeT
With woman compounds I am cloy'dR
Which only pleased in Biddy FloydR
For foreign aid what need they roamU
Whom fate has amply blest at homeU
Unerring Heaven with bounteous handR
Has form'd a model for your landR
Whom Jove endued with every graceN
The glory of the Granard raceN
Now destined by the powers divineV
The blessing of another lineV
Then would you paint a matchless dameW
Whom you'd consign to endless fameW
Invoke not Cytherea's aidR
Nor borrow from the blue eyed maidR
Nor need you on the Graces callX
Take qualities from DonegalX
