Rhyme Scheme: ABCDCE DCFFEGCHIEDDD EEEJDEFDBDDFKLLKDK MDFKDKBWhen Cypris saw Adonis | A |
In death already lying | B |
With all his locks dishevelled | C |
And cheeks turned wan and ghastly | D |
She bade the Loves attendant | C |
To bring the boar before her | E |
- | |
And lo the winged ones fleetly | D |
They scoured through all the wild wood | C |
The wretched boar they tracked him | F |
And bound and doubly bound him | F |
One fixed on him a halter | E |
And dragged him on a captive | G |
Another drave him onward | C |
And smote him with his arrows | H |
But terror struck the beast came | I |
For much he feared Cythere | E |
To him spake Aphrodite | D |
'Of wild beasts all the vilest | D |
This thigh by thee was 't wounded | D |
Was 't thou that smote my lover ' | - |
To her the beast made answer | E |
'I swear to thee Cythere | E |
By thee and by thy lover | E |
Yea and by these my fetters | J |
And them that do pursue me | D |
Thy lord thy lovely lover | E |
I never willed to wound him | F |
I saw him like a statue | D |
And could not bide the burning | B |
Nay for his thigh was naked | D |
And mad was I to kiss it | D |
And thus my tusk it harmed him | F |
Take these my tusks O Cypris | K |
And break them and chastise them | L |
For wherefore should I wear them | L |
These passionate defences | K |
If this doth not suffice thee | D |
Then cut my lips out also | K |
Why dared they try to kiss him ' | - |
- | |
Then Cypris had compassion | M |
She bade the Loves attendant | D |
To loose the bonds that bound him | F |
From that day her he follows | K |
And flees not to the wild wood | D |
But joins the Loves and always | K |
He bears Love's flame unflinching | B |
