When Cypris saw AdonisA
In death already lyingB
With all his locks dishevelledC
And cheeks turned wan and ghastlyD
She bade the Loves attendantC
To bring the boar before herE
-
And lo the winged ones fleetlyD
They scoured through all the wild woodC
The wretched boar they tracked himF
And bound and doubly bound himF
One fixed on him a halterE
And dragged him on a captiveG
Another drave him onwardC
And smote him with his arrowsH
But terror struck the beast cameI
For much he feared CythereE
To him spake AphroditeD
'Of wild beasts all the vilestD
This thigh by thee was 't woundedD
Was 't thou that smote my lover '-
To her the beast made answerE
'I swear to thee CythereE
By thee and by thy loverE
Yea and by these my fettersJ
And them that do pursue meD
Thy lord thy lovely loverE
I never willed to wound himF
I saw him like a statueD
And could not bide the burningB
Nay for his thigh was nakedD
And mad was I to kiss itD
And thus my tusk it harmed himF
Take these my tusks O CyprisK
And break them and chastise themL
For wherefore should I wear themL
These passionate defencesK
If this doth not suffice theeD
Then cut my lips out alsoK
Why dared they try to kiss him '-
-
Then Cypris had compassionM
She bade the Loves attendantD
To loose the bonds that bound himF
From that day her he followsK
And flees not to the wild woodD
But joins the Loves and alwaysK
He bears Love's flame unflinchingB
