Vanity Of Life Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFG HIHI JKJK LMNO PQPQ

The evils that beset our pathA
Who can prevent or cureB
We stand upon the brink of deathC
When most we seem secureB
-
If we today sweet peace possessD
It soon may be withdrawnE
Some change may plunge us in distressD
Before tomorrow's dawnE
-
Disease and pain invade our healthF
And find an easy preyG
And oft when least expected wealthF
Takes wings and flies awayG
-
A fever or a blow can shakeH
Our wisdom's boasted ruleI
And of the brightest genius makeH
A madman or a foolI
-
The gourds from which we look for fruitJ
Produce us only painK
A worm unseen attacks the rootJ
And all our hopes are vainK
-
I pity those who seek no moreL
Than such a world can giveM
Wretched they are and blind and poorN
And dying while they liveO
-
Since sin has filled the earth with woeP
And creatures fade and dieQ
Lord wean our hearts from things belowP
And fix our hopes on highQ
