As parched in the barren sandsA
Beneath a burning skyB
The worthless bramble with'ring standsA
And only grows to dieB

Such is the sinner's aweful caseC
Who makes the world his trustD
And dares his confidence to placeC
In vanity and dustD

A secret curse destroys his rootE
And dries his moisture upF
He lives awhile but bears no fruitE
Then dies without a hopeG

But happy he whose hopes dependH
Upon the Lord aloneI
The soul that trusts in such a friendH
Can ne'er be overthrownI

Though gourds should wither cisterns breakJ
And creature comforts dieB
No change his solid hope can shakeJ
Or stop his sure supplyB

So thrives and blooms the tree whose rootsK
By constant streams are fedL
Arrayed in green and rich in fruitsK
It rears its branching headL

It thrives though rain should be deniedM
And drought around prevailN
