Could the creatures help or ease usA
Seldom should we think of prayerB
Few if any come to JesusA
Till reduced to self dispairB
Long we either slight or doubt himC
But when all the means we tryD
Prove we cannot do without himC
Then at last to him we cryD
-
Thus the ruler when his daughterE
Suffered much though Christ was nighD
Still deferred it till he thought herE
At the very point to dieD
Though he mourned for her conditionF
He did not entreat the LordG
Till he found that no physicianF
But himself could help affordG
-
Jesus did not once upbraid himC
That he had no sooner comeH
But a gracious answer made himC
And went straitway with him homeI
Yet his faith was put to trialJ
When his servants came and saidK
Though he gave thee no denialJ
'Tis too late the child is deadK
-
Jesus to prevent his grievingL
Kindly spoke and eased his painM
Be not fearful but believingL
Thou shalt see her live againN
When he found the people weepingL
Cease he said no longer mournO
For she is not dead but sleepingL
Then they laughed him to scornO
-
O thou meek and lowly SaviorE
How determined is thy loveP
Not this rude unkind behaviorE
Could thy gracious purpose moveQ
Soon as he the room had enteredR
Spoke and took her by the handS
Death at once his prey surrenderedR
And she lived at his commandS
-
Fear not then distressed believerE
Venture on his mighty nameT
He is able to deliverE
And his love is still the sameT
Can his pity or his powerE
Suffer thee to pray in vainM
Wait but his appointed hourE
And thy suit thou shalt obtainM
