The Rich Man And Lazarus Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFG HIHIHH JKJKHH LLLLHH MHMHNN JHJHOP

A Worldling spent each dayA
In luxury and stateB
While a believer layA
A beggar at his gateB
Think not the Lord's appointments strangeC
Death made a great and lasting changeC
-
Death brought the saint releaseD
From want disease and scornE
And to the land of peaceD
His soul by angels borneE
In Abraham's bosom safely placedF
Enjoys an everlasting feastG
-
The rich man also diedH
And in a moment fellI
From all his pomp and prideH
Into the flames of hellI
The beggar's bliss from far beheldH
His soul with double anguish filledH
-
O Abram send he criesJ
But his request was vainK
The beggar from the skiesJ
To mitigate my painK
One drop of water I entreatH
To soothe my tongue's tormenting heatH
-
Let all who worldly pelfL
And worldly spirits haveL
Observe each for himselfL
The answer Abram gaveL
Remember thou wast filled with goodH
While the poor beggar pined for foodH
-
Neglected at thy doorM
With tears he begged his breadH
But now he weeps no moreM
His griefs and pains are fledH
His joys eternally will flowN
While thine expire in endless woeN
-
Lord make us truly wiseJ
To choose thy peoples' lotH
And earthly joys despiseJ
Which soon will be forgotH
The greatest evil we can fearO
Is to possess our portion hereP
