The Prodigal Son Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EAEF GHGH IJKJ LEME NOPO QRQS

Afflictions though they seem severeA
In mercy oft are sentB
They stopped the prodigal's careerA
And forced him to repentB
-
Although he no relentings feltC
Till he had spent his storeD
His stubborn heart began to meltC
When famine pinched him soreD
-
What have I gained by sin he saidE
But hunger shame and fearA
My father's house abounds with breadE
While I am starving hereF
-
I'll go and tell him all I've doneG
And fall before his faceH
Unworthy to be called his sonG
I'll seek a servant's placeH
-
His father saw him coming backI
He saw and ran and smiledJ
And threw his arms around the neckK
Of his rebellious childJ
-
Father I've sinned but O forgiveL
I've heard enough he saidE
Rejoice my house my son's aliveM
For whom I mourned as deadE
-
Now let the fatted calf be slainN
And spread the news aroundO
My son was dead but lives againP
Was lost but now is foundO
-
'Tis thus the Lord his love revealsQ
To call poor sinners homeR
More than a father's love he feelsQ
And welcomes all that comeS
