The Gourd Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHA JKJL MBMB

As once for Jonah so the LordA
To soothe and cheer my mournful hoursB
Prepared for me a pleasing gourdA
Cool was its shade and sweet its flow'rsB
-
To prize his gift was surely rightC
But through the folly of my heartD
It hid the Giver from my sightC
And soon my joy was changed to smartD
-
While I admired its beauteous formE
Its pleasant shade and graceful fruitF
The Lord displeased sent forth a wormG
Unseen to prey upon the rootF
-
I trembled when I saw it fadeH
But guilt restrained the murm'ring wordI
My folly I confessed and prayedH
Forgive my sin and spare my gourdA
-
His wondrous love can ne'er be toldJ
He heard me and relieved my painK
His word the threat'ning worm controlledJ
And bid my gourd revive againL
-
Now Lord my gourd is mine no moreM
'Tis thine who only couldst it raiseB
The idol of my heart beforeM
Henceforth shall flourish to thy praiseB
