The Foolish Virgins Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EAEAFGFG HIHIJKJL MNONPQPQ RSBSCTCU

When descending from the skyA
The Bridegroom shall appearB
And the solemn midnight cryA
Shall call professors nearB
How the sound our hearts will dampC
How will shame o'erspread each faceD
If we only have a lampC
Without the oil of graceD
-
Foolish virgins then will wakeE
And seek for a supplyA
But in vain the pains they takeE
To borrow or to buyA
Then with those they now despiseF
Earnestly they'll wish to shareG
But the best among the wiseF
Will have no oil to spareG
-
Wise are they and truly blestH
Who then shall ready beI
But despair will seize the restH
And dreadful miseryI
Once they'll cry we scorned to doubtJ
Though in lies our trust we putK
Now our lamp of hope is outJ
The door of mercy shutL
-
If they then presume to pleadM
Lord open to us nowN
We on earth have heard and prayedO
And with thy saints did bowN
He will answer from his throneP
Though you with my people mixedQ
Yet to me you ne'er were knownP
Depart your doom is fixedQ
-
O that none who worship hereR
May hear that word DepartS
Lord impress a godly fearB
On each professor's heartS
Help us Lord to search the campC
Let us not ourselves beguileT
Trusting to a dying lampC
Without a stock of oilU
