The Disciples At Sea Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHIJI KLKMNONO PQPQRSRS TUTUVWVW

Constrained by their Lord to embarkA
And venture without him to seaB
The season tempestuous and darkA
How grieved the disciples must beB
But though he remained on the shoreC
He spent the night for them in prayerD
They still were as safe as beforeC
And equally under his careD
-
They strove though in vain for a whileE
The force of the waves to withstandF
But when they were wearied with toilG
They saw their dear Saviour at handF
They gladly received him on boardH
His presence their spirits revivedI
The sea became calm at his wordJ
And soon at their port they arrivedI
-
We like the disciples are tossedK
By storms on a perilous deepL
But cannot be possibly lostK
For Jesus has charge of the shipM
Though billows and winds are enragedN
And threaten to make us their sportO
This pilot his word has engagedN
To bring us in safety to portO
-
If sometimes we struggle aloneP
And he is withdrawn from our viewQ
It makes us more willing to ownP
We nothing without him can doQ
Then Satan our hopes would assailR
But Jesus is still within callS
And when our poor efforts quite failR
He comes in good time and does allS
-
Yet Lord we are ready to shrinkT
Unless we thy presence perceiveU
O save us we cry or we sinkT
We would but we cannot believeU
The night has been long and severeV
The winds and the seas are still highW
Dear Saviour this moment appearV
And say to our souls It is IW
