The Creatures In The Lord's Hands Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IIJJ KKLL MNGG

The water stood like walls of brassA
To let the sons of Israel passA
And from the rock in rivers burstB
At Moses' prayer to quench their thirstB
-
The fire restrained by God's commandsC
Could only burn his people's bandsC
Too faint when he was with them thereD
To singe their garments or their hairD
-
At Daniel's feet the lions layE
Like harmless lambs nor touched their preyE
And ravens which on carrion fedF
Procured Elijah flesh and breadF
-
Thus creatures only can fulfillG
Their great Creator's holy willG
And when his servants need their aidH
His purposes must be obeyedH
-
So if his blessing he refuseI
Their pow'r to help they quickly loseI
Sure as on creatures we dependJ
Our hopes in disappointment endJ
-
Then let us trust the Lord aloneK
And creature confidence disownK
Nor if they threaten need we fearL
They cannot hurt if he be nearL
-
If instruments of pain they proveM
Still they are guided by his loveN
As lancets by the surgeon's skillG
Which wound to cure and not to killG
