That Rock Was Christ Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDE FFGG HHII JKLL MMNO

When Israel's tribes were parch'd with thirstA
Forth from the rock the waters burstA
And all their future journey throughB
Yielded them drink and Gospel tooB
-
In Moses' rod a type they sawC
Of his severe and fiery lawC
The smitten rock prefigur'd HimD
From whose pierc'd side all blessings streamE
-
But ah the types were all too faintF
His sorrows or his worth to paintF
Slight was the stroke of Moses' rodG
But he endur'd the wrath of GodG
-
Their outward rock could feel no painH
But ours was wounded torn and slainH
The rock gave but a wat'ry floodI
But Jesus pour'd forth streams of bloodI
-
The earth is like their wildernessJ
A land of drought and sore distressK
Without one stream from pole to poleL
To satisfy a thirsty soulL
-
But let the Saviour's praise resoundM
In him refreshing streams are foundM
Which pardon strength and comfort giveN
And thirsty sinners drink and liveO
