How hurtful was the choice of LotA
Who took up his abodeB
Because it was a fruitful spotA
With them who feared not GodC
-
A pris'ner he was quickly madeD
Bereaved of all his storeE
And but for Abraham's timely aidD
He had returned no moreE
-
Yet still he seemed resolved to stayF
As if it were his restG
Although their sins from day to dayF
His righteous soul distressedG
-
Awhile he stayed with anxious mindH
Exposed to scorn and strifeI
At last he left his all behindH
And fled to save his lifeI
-
In vain his sons in law he warnedJ
They thought he told his dreamsK
His daughters too of them had learnedL
And perished in the flamesM
-
His wife escaped a little wayF
But died for looking backN
Does not her case to pilgrims sayF
Beware of growing slackN
-
Yea Lot himself could ling'ring standO
Though vengeance was in viewP
'Twas mercy plucked him by the handO
Or he had perished tooP
-
The doom of Sodom wilt be oursQ
If to the earth we cleaveR
Lord quicken all our drowsy pow'rsQ
To flee to thee and liveS
