Jericho; Or, The Waters Healed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGFGHIHJ KLKLMNMN AOPOQRSR TUVUWXWXThough Jericho pleasantly stood | A |
And looked like a promising soil | B |
The harvest produced little food | C |
To answer the husbandman's toil | B |
The water some property had | D |
Which poisonous proved to the ground | E |
The springs were corrupted and bad | D |
The streams spread a barrenness round | E |
- | |
But soon by the cruse and the salt | F |
Prepared by Elisha's command | G |
The water was cured of its fault | F |
And plenty enriched the land | G |
An emblem sure this of the grace | H |
On fruitless dead sinners bestowed | I |
For man is in Jericho's case | H |
Till cured by the mercy of God | J |
- | |
How noble a creature he seems | K |
What knowledge invention and skill | L |
How large and extensive his schemes | K |
How much can he do if he will | L |
His zeal to be learned and wise | M |
Will yield to no limits or bars | N |
He measures the earth and the skies | M |
And numbers and marshals the stars | N |
- | |
Yet still he is barren of good | A |
In vain are his talents and art | O |
For sin has infected his blood | P |
And poisoned the streams of his heart | O |
Though cockatrice eggs he can hatch | Q |
Or spider like cobwebs can weave | R |
'Tis madness to labor and watch | S |
For what will destroy or deceive | R |
- | |
But grace like the salt in the cruse | T |
When cast in the spring of the soul | U |
A wonderful change will produce | V |
Diffusing new life through the whole | U |
The wilderness blooms like a rose | W |
The heart which was vile and abhorred | X |
Now fruitful and beautiful grows | W |
The garden and joy of the Lord | X |
