Jericho; Or, The Waters Healed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGFGHIHJ KLKLMNMN AOPOQRSR TUVUWXWX

Though Jericho pleasantly stoodA
And looked like a promising soilB
The harvest produced little foodC
To answer the husbandman's toilB
The water some property hadD
Which poisonous proved to the groundE
The springs were corrupted and badD
The streams spread a barrenness roundE
-
But soon by the cruse and the saltF
Prepared by Elisha's commandG
The water was cured of its faultF
And plenty enriched the landG
An emblem sure this of the graceH
On fruitless dead sinners bestowedI
For man is in Jericho's caseH
Till cured by the mercy of GodJ
-
How noble a creature he seemsK
What knowledge invention and skillL
How large and extensive his schemesK
How much can he do if he willL
His zeal to be learned and wiseM
Will yield to no limits or barsN
He measures the earth and the skiesM
And numbers and marshals the starsN
-
Yet still he is barren of goodA
In vain are his talents and artO
For sin has infected his bloodP
And poisoned the streams of his heartO
Though cockatrice eggs he can hatchQ
Or spider like cobwebs can weaveR
'Tis madness to labor and watchS
For what will destroy or deceiveR
-
But grace like the salt in the cruseT
When cast in the spring of the soulU
A wonderful change will produceV
Diffusing new life through the wholeU
The wilderness blooms like a roseW
The heart which was vile and abhorredX
Now fruitful and beautiful growsW
The garden and joy of the LordX
