Jacob's Ladder Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDE FGFGHEHE IJIJKLKL MNONPQRQ STUVWXWY

If the Lord our leader beA
We may follow without fearB
East or West by land or seaA
Home with him is everywhereC
When from Esau Jacob fledD
Though his pillow was a stoneE
And the ground his humble bedD
Yet he was not left aloneE
-
Kings are often waking keptF
Racked with cares on beds of stateG
Never king like Jacob sleptF
For he lay at heaven's gateG
Lo he saw a ladder rearedH
Reaching to the heav'nly throneE
At the top the Lord appearedH
Spake and claimed him for his ownE
-
Fear not Jacob thou art mineI
And my presence with thee goesJ
On thy heart my love shall shineI
And my arm subdue thy foesJ
From my promise comfort takeK
For my help in trouble callL
Never will I thee forsakeK
'Till I have accomplished allL
-
Well does Jacob's ladder suitM
To the gospel throne of graceN
We are at the ladder's footO
Every hour in every placeN
By affirming flesh and bloodP
Jesus heav'n and earth unitesQ
We by faith ascend to GodR
God to dwell with us delightsQ
-
They who know the Saviour's nameS
Are for all events preparedT
What can changes do to themU
Who have such a Guide and GuardV
Should they traverse earth aroundW
To the ladder still they comeX
Every spot is holy groundW
God is there and he's their homeY
