In Evil Long I Took Delight Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFH IJIJ KLMN OPQP RSRS

In evil long I took delightA
Unawed by shame or fearB
Till a new object struck my sightA
And stopped my wild careerB
-
I saw One hanging on a treeC
In agony and bloodD
Who fixed His languid eyes on meC
As near His cross I stoodE
-
Sure never to my latest breathF
Can I forget that lookG
It seemed to charge me with His deathF
Though not a word He spokeH
-
My conscience felt and owned the guiltI
And plunged me in despairJ
I saw my sins His blood had spiltI
And helped to nail Him thereJ
-
A second look He gave which saidK
I freely all forgiveL
This blood is for thy ransom paidM
I die that thou mayst liveN
-
Thus while His death my sin displaysO
In all its blackest hueP
Such is the mystery of graceQ
It seals my pardon tooP
-
With pleasing grief and mournful joyR
My spirit now is fill'dS
That I should such a life destroyR
Yet live by Him I kill'dS
