Humbled And Silenced By Mercy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLN OPOP QRQR

Once perishing in blood I layA
Creatures no help could giveB
But Jesus passed me in the wayA
He saw and bid me liveC
-
Though Satan still his rule maintainedD
And all his arts employedE
That mighty Word his rage restrainedD
I could not be destroyedE
-
At length the time of love arrivedF
When I my Lord should knowG
Then Satan of his pow'r deprivedF
Was forced to let me goG
-
O can I e'er that day forgetH
When Jesus kindly spokeI
Poor soul my blood has paid thy debtH
And now I break thy yokeI
-
Henceforth I take thee for my ownJ
And give myself to theeK
Forsake the idols thou hast knownJ
And yield thyself to meK
-
Ah worthless heart it promised fairL
And said it would be thineM
I little thought it e'er would dareL
Again with idols joinN
-
Lord dost thou such backslidings healO
And pardon all that's pastP
Sure if I am not made of steelO
Thou hast prevailed at lastP
-
My tongue which rashly spoke beforeQ
This mercy will restrainR
Surely I now shall boast no moreQ
Nor censure nor complainR
