Gideon's Fleece Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLM NONO PQPK

The signs which God to Gideon gaveA
His holy Sovereignty made knownB
That He alone has pow'r to saveA
And claims the glory as his ownB
-
The dew which first the fleece had filledC
When all the earth was dry aroundD
Was from it afterwards withheldE
And only fell upon the groundD
-
To Israel thus the heavenly dewF
Of saving truth was long restrainedG
Of which the Gentiles nothing knewF
But dry and desolate remainedG
-
But now the Gentiles have receivedH
The balmy dew of gospel peaceI
And Israel who his spirit grievedH
Is left a dry and empty fleeceI
-
This dew still falls at his commandJ
To keep his chosen plants aliveK
They shall though in a thirsty landJ
Like willows by the waters thriveK
-
But chiefly when his people meetL
To hear his word and seek his faceM
The gentle dew with influence sweetL
Descends and nourishes their graceM
-
But ah what numbers still are deadN
Though under means of grace they lieO
The dew still falling round their headN
And yet their heart untouched and dryO
-
Dear Saviour hear us when we callP
To wrestling prayer an answer giveQ
Pour down thy dew upon us allP
That all may feel and all may liveK
