Poor Esau repented too lateA
That once he his birth right despisedB
And sold for a morsel of meatC
What could not too highly be prizedB
How great was his anguish when toldD
The blessing he sought to obtainE
Was gone with the birth right he soldD
And none could recall it againF
-
He stands as a warning to allG
Wherever the gospel shall comeH
O Hasten and yield to the callG
While yet for repentance there's roomI
Your season will quickly be pastJ
Then hear and obey it todayK
Lest when you seek mercy at lastJ
The Saviour should frown you awayK
-
What is it the world can proposeL
A morsel of meat at the bestM
For this are you willing to loseN
A share in the joys of the blestM
Its pleasures will speedily endO
Its favor and praise are but breathP
And what can its profits befriendO
Your soul in the moment of deathP
-
If Jesus for these you despiseQ
And sin to the Saviour preferR
In vain your entreaties and criesQ
When summoned to stand at his barS
How will you his presence abideT
What anguish will torture your heartU
The saints all enthroned by his sideT
And you be compelled to departU
-
Too often dear Saviour have IV
Preferred some poor trifle to theeW
How is it thou dost not denyV
The blessing and birth right to meW
No better than Esau I amX
Though pardon and heav'n be mineY
To me belongs nothing but shameZ
The praise and the glory be thineY
