What a mournful life is mineA
Fill with crosses pains and caresB
Every work defiled with sinC
Every step beset with snaresB
-
If alone I pensive fitD
I myself can hardly bearE
If I pass along the streetF
Sin and riot triumph thereE
-
Jesus how my heart is painedG
How it mourns for souls deceivedH
When I hear thy name profanedH
When I see thy Spirit grievedH
-
When thy children's griefs I viewI
Their distress becomes my ownJ
All I hear or see or doI
Makes me tremble weep and groanJ
-
Mourning thus I long had beenC
When I heard my Saviour's voiceK
Thou hast cause to mourn for sinC
But in me thou may'st rejoiceK
-
This kind word dispelled my griefL
Put to silence my complaintsM
Though of sinners I am chiefL
He his ranked me with his saintsM
-
Though constrained to dwell a whileN
Where the wicked strive and brawlO
Let them frown so he but smileN
Heav'n will make amends for allO
-
There believers we shall restH
Free from sorrow sin and fearsP
Nothing there our peace molestsQ
Through eternal rounds of yearsP
-
Let us then the fight endureR
See our Captain looking downS
He will make the conquest sureR
And bestow the promised crownS
