Dagon Before The Ark Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHI JKLK

When first to make my heart his ownA
The Lord revealed his mighty graceB
Self reigned like Dagon on the throneA
But could not long maintain its placeB
-
It fell and owned the pow'r divineC
Grace can with ease the vict'ry gainD
But soon this wretched heart of mineC
Contrived to set it up againE
-
Again the Lord his name proclaimedF
And brought the hateful idol lowG
Then self like Dagon broken maimedF
Seemed to receive a mortal blowG
-
Yet self is not of life bereftH
Nor ceases to oppose his willI
Though but a maimed stump be leftH
'Tis Dagon 'tis an idol stillI
-
Lord must I always guilty proveJ
And idols in my heart have roomK
Oh let the fire of heavenly loveL
The very slump of self consumeK
