Ah how the Human Mind wearies herselfA
With her own wand'rings and involved in gloomB
Impenetrable speculates amissC
Measuring in her folly things divineD
By human laws inscrib'd on adamantE
By laws of Man's device and counsels fix'dF
For ever by the hours that pass and dieG
How shall the face of Nature then be plow'dH
Into deep wrinkles and shall years at lastI
On the great Parent fix a sterile curseJ
Shall even she confess old age and haltK
And palsy smitten shake her starry browsL
Shall foul Antiquity with rust and droughtM
And famine vex the radiant worlds aboveN
Shall Time's unsated maw crave and engulfO
The very heav'ns that regulate his flightP
And was the Sire of all able to fenceQ
His works and to uphold the circling worldsR
But through improvident and heedless hasteS
Let slip th'occasion So then All is lostT
And in some future evil hour yon archU
Shall crumble and come thund'ring down the polesV
Jar in collision the Olympian KingW
Fall with his throne and Pallas holding forthX
The terrors of her Gorgon shield in vainY
Shall rush to the abyss like Vulcan hurl'dZ
Down into Lemnos through the gate of heav'nY
Thou also with precipitated wheelsA2
Phoebus thy own son's fall shalt imitateB2
With hideous ruin shalt impress the DeepC2
Suddenly and the flood shall reek and hissC
At the extinction of the Lamp of DayD2
Then too shall Haemus cloven to his baseE2
Be shattered and the huge Ceraunian hillsF2
Once weapons of Tartarean Dis immersedG2
In Erebus shall fill Himself with fearH2
No The Almighty Father surer lay'dG2
His deep foundations and providing wellI2
For the event of all the scales of FateG2
Suspended in just equipoise and badeG2
His universal works from age to ageJ2
One tenour hold perpetual undisturb'dG2
Hence the Prime Mover wheels itself aboutG2
Continual day by day and with it bearsK2
In social measure swift the heav'ns aroundG2
Not tardier now is Saturn than of oldG2
Nor radiant less the burning casque of MarsL2
Phoebus his vigour unimpair'd still showsM2
Th'effulgence of his youth nor needs the GodG2
A downward course that he may warm the valesN2
But ever rich in influence runs his roadG2
Sign after sign through all the heav'nly zoneY
Beautiful as at first ascends the starO2
From odorif'rous Ind whose office isP2
To gather home betimes th'ethereal flockQ2
To pour them o'er the skies again at EveR2
And to discriminate the Night and DayG2
Still Cynthia's changeful horn waxes and wanesS2
Alternate and with arms extended stillT2
She welcomes to her breast her brother's beamsU2
Nor have the elements deserted yetG2
Their functions thunder with as loud a strokeV2
As erst smites through the rocks and scatters themW2
The East still howls still the relentless NorthX
Invades the shudd'ring Scythian still he breathesX2
The Winter and still rolls the storms alongY2
The King of Ocean with his wonted forceZ2
Beats on Pelorus o'er the Deep is heardG2
The hoarse alarm of Triton's sounding shellI2
Nor swim the monsters of th'Aegean seaA3
In shallows or beneath diminish'd wavesB3
Thou too thy antient vegetative pow'rO2
Enjoy'st O Earth Narcissus still is sweetG2
And Phoebus still thy Favourite and stillT2
Thy Fav'rite Cytherea both retainY
Their beauty nor the mountains ore enrich'dG2
For punishment of Man with purer goldG2
Teem'd ever or with brighter gems the DeepC2
Thus in unbroken series all proceedsC3
And shall till wide involving either poleD3
And the immensity of yonder heav'nY
The final flames of destiny absorbE3
The world consum'd in one enormous pyreF3
