The Shadow Of The Cross Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AA BB CC DD EE FF GH II JJ II KK LL MM

At the drowsy dusk when the shadows creepA
From the golden west where the sunbeams sleepA
-
An angel mused Is there good or illB
In the mad world's heart since on Calvary's hillB
-
'Round the cross a mid day twilight fellC
That darkened earth and o'ershadowed hellC
-
Through the streets of a city the angel spedD
Like an open scroll men's hearts he readD
-
In a monarch's ear his courtiers liedE
And humble faces hid hearts of prideE
-
Men's hate waxed hot and their hearts grew coldF
As they haggled and fought for the lust of goldF
-
Despairing he cried After all these yearsG
Is there naught but hatred and strife and tearsH
-
He found two waifs in an attic bareI
A single crust was their meagre fareI
-
One strove to quiet the other's criesJ
And the love light dawned in her famished eyesJ
-
As she kissed the child with a motherly airI
I don't need mine you can have my shareI
-
Then the angel knew that the earthly crossK
And the sorrow and shame were not wholly lossK
-
At dawn when hushed was earth's busy humL
And men looked not for their Christ to comeL
-
From the attic poor to the palace grandM
The King and the beggar went hand in handM
