Eventide Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IHIH

The day is past and the toilers ceaseA
The land grows dim 'mid the shadows greyB
And hearts are glad for the dark brings peaceA
At the close of dayB
-
Each weary toiler with lingering paceC
As he homeward turns with the long day doneD
Looks out to the west with the light on his faceC
Of the setting sunD
-
Yet some see not with their sin dimmed eyesE
The promise of rest in the fading lightF
But the clouds loom dark in the angry skiesE
At the fall of nightF
-
And some see only a golden skyG
Where the elms their welcoming arms stretch wideH
To the calling rooks as they homeward flyG
At the eventideH
-
It speaks of peace that comes after strifeI
Of the rest He sends to the hearts He triedH
Of the calm that follows the stormiest lifeI
God's eventideH
