One night two lonely women metA
Beside a storm swept bayB
With tears their mournful eyes were wetA
Their pale lips salt with sprayB
They passed then turned as though each yearnedC
Some friendly word to sayB
-
Poor soul cried one hast thou no fearD
To walk this haunted strandE
What hopeless sorrow brings thee hereF
Where dead men drift to landE
I too have grief beyond reliefG
Speak I can understandE
-
I mourn a son the other saidH
That ocean is his graveI
My heart will not be comfortedJ
It breaks with every waveI
Would I might sleep in yonder deepK
With him I could not saveI
-
The wind was raging as to nightL
Straight on these rocks it blewM
I watched until the dawning lightL
Disclosed the wreck to viewM
From where we stand I saw his handE
Wave me a last adieuM
-
He deemed the boat too frail to bearN
Another living freightO
'Push off' he said with tranquil airN
'Go first and I will wait '-
But all the while despite his smileP
He knew 'twould be too lateO
-
That heartless crew shall nevermoreQ
God's absolution findR
They watched like cravens from the shoreQ
The man they left behindR
Go down before the breakers' roarQ
The surges and the windR
-
Hence when such maddened tempests raveI
I cannot rest at homeS
For then the billows deck his graveI
With flowers of snow white foamS
And here I pray till break of dayB
Beneath night's starless domeS
-
A silence fell then faint and lowT
The other weeping saidH
My heavier woe thou needst not knowT
Within his ocean bedH
On thy son's name there rests no shameU
Would God that mine were deadH
