To The Sphinx Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBCDDA AEFEFGGA AHIHIJJA AKLKLMMA ANJNJOOA

O sleepless SphinxA
Thy sadly patient eyesB
Forever gazing o'er the shifting sandsC
Have watched Earth's countless dynasties ariseB
Stalk forth like spectres waving gory handsC
Then fade away with scarce a lasting traceD
To mark the secret of their dwelling placeD
O sleepless SphinxA
-
O changeless SphinxA
The very dawn of TimeE
Beheld thee sculptured from the living rockF
Still wears thy face its primal look sublimeE
Surviving all the hoary ages' shockF
Still royal art thou in thy proud reposeG
As when the sun on tuneful Memnon roseG
O changeless SphinxA
-
O voiceless SphinxA
Thy solemn lips are dumbH
Time's awful secrets lie within thy breastI
Age follows age revering pilgrims comeH
From every clime to urge the same requestI
That thou wilt speak Poor creatures of a dayJ
In calm disdain thou seest them die awayJ
O voiceless SphinxA
-
Majestic SphinxA
Thou crouchest by a seaK
Whose fawn hued wavelets clasp thy buried feetL
Whose desert surface petrified like theeK
Gleams white with sails of many an Arab fleetL
Whose tawny billows surging with the stormM
Break on thy flanks and overleap thy formM
Majestic SphinxA
-
Eternal SphinxA
The Pyramids are thineN
Their giant summits guard thee night and dayJ
On thee they look when stars in splendor shineN
Or while around their crests the sunbeams playJ
Thine own coevals who with thee remainO
Colossal Genii of the boundless plainO
Eternal SphinxA
