To The Countess Guiccioli, After Reading Her Recollections Of Lord Byron Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGHGHIJIJ KLKLMNMN

Like one who homeward bound from distant landsA
Describes strange climes and visions passing fairB
Yet deftly hides from others' eyes and handsA
A private casket filled with treasures rareB
So favored Countess all that thou dost sayC
Is nothing to thy secrets left unsaidD
Thy printed souvenirs are but the sprayC
Above the depths of ocean's briny bedD
For oh how often must thy mind retraceE
Soft phrases whispered in the Tuscan tongueF
Love's changes sweeping o'er his mobile faceE
And kisses sweeter far than he had sungF
The gleam of passion in his glorious eyesG
The hours of inspiration when he wroteH
Recalled to Earth in sudden sweet surpriseG
At feeling thy white arms about his throatH
To have been loved by Byron Not in youthI
When ardent senses tempt to reckless choiceJ
But in maturer years when keen eyed TruthI
Reveals the folly of the siren's voiceJ
Last love is best and this thou didst enjoyK
Thy happy fate to see no rival claimL
A share in what was thine without alloyK
How must the remnant of thy life seem tameL
Yet this thy recompense that thou dost keepM
Thy friend and lover safe from every changeN
For loyal to thy love he fell asleepM
And life it is not death that can estrangeN
