Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DBDBEE FGHGII JKJKLL BMBMGG NONPQQ JRJRSS TUTUVV AIAIWWThe smile of God was in the air | A |
Enwreathed in veils of silvery hue | B |
The valley lay divinely fair | A |
Beneath a cloudless vault of blue | B |
And singing like a bird set free | C |
The river hurried to the sea | C |
- | |
Through Alpine ether crystal clear | D |
The genial sun of South Tyrol | B |
Diffused its blessed warmth and cheer | D |
Enriching body mind and soul | B |
While music floated o'er the stream | E |
And made such beauty seem a dream | E |
- | |
Enraptured with the sun's caress | F |
And windless warmth 'mid peaks of snow | G |
In careless quest of happiness | H |
The gay world sauntered to and fro | G |
Or seated on the well kept strand | I |
Enjoyed the music of the band | I |
- | |
Upon a bench remote from those | J |
Whose dress betokened rank or wealth | K |

Betrayed a fruitless search for health | K |
An aged couple near their end | L |
United yet without a friend | L |
- | |
But still they bravely tried to smile | B |
So warm the sun so fair the scene | M |

Ere death's cold shadow crept between | M |
And music's softly rhythmic flow | G |
Recalled their youth of long ago | G |

How comes it you are not ashamed | N |
In such a place to play the boor | P |
From company like this withdraw | Q |
Obey the mandate of the law | Q |

The startled strangers meekly rose | J |
And moved away with downcast eyes | R |
Too wonted to such cruel blows | J |
To manifest the least surprise | R |
Too humbled to inquire why | S |
Too timid to attempt reply | S |
- | |
Poor outcasts from that joyous stage | T |
Where well dressed hundreds strolled at ease | U |
With faltering steps and bowed with age | T |
They vanished slowly 'neath the trees | U |
But neither scanned the other's face | V |
For fear a falling tear to trace | V |
- | |
Farewell sweet music laden air | A |
And sunshine on the sheltered strand | I |
I follow where that outcast pair | A |
Are walking sadly hand in hand | I |
For me your vaunted charm hath fled | W |
While they remain uncomforted | W |
