| In careless quest of happiness | H |
| The gay world sauntered to and fro | G |
| Or seated on the well kept strand | I |

| Too wonted to such cruel blows | J |
| To manifest the least surprise | R |
| Too humbled to inquire why | S |
| Too timid to attempt reply | S |

| Poor outcasts from that joyous stage | T |
| Where well dressed hundreds strolled at ease | U |
| With faltering steps and bowed with age | T |
| They vanished slowly 'neath the trees | U |
| But neither scanned the other's face | V |
| For fear a falling tear to trace | V |

| Farewell sweet music laden air | A |
| And sunshine on the sheltered strand | I |
| I follow where that outcast pair | A |
| Are walking sadly hand in hand | I |
| For me your vaunted charm hath fled | W |
| While they remain uncomforted | W |
