The Home-coming From Rome Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB ACAC ADAD EFEF GHGH IJIJ GKGK LBLB MNMN

Make haste There is but one more turningA
The horses cannot go too fastB
So eagerly our hearts are yearningA
To see the longed for home at lastB
-
Here is the shrine the lamp still burningA
Beside the vineyard's massive wallC
And see to welcome our returningA
The banners on the flagstaffs tallC
-
Before the gate our servants wearingA
Their brightest smiles together standD
In quaint Tyrolean style preparingA
To kiss respectfully the handD
-
Now too the dogs perceive their masterE
And rush to meet our carriage wheelsF
The loyal Leo first and fasterE
The dackels close upon his heelsF
-
How wild the joy how loud the chorusG
Our old familiar tones exciteH
Dear faithful creatures that adore usG
How genuine their keen delightH
-
The door is passed the hall is enteredI
How true it is where'er we roamJ
That here alone our hearts are centeredI
That no place hath the charm of HomeJ
-
Here smile the pictures ranged above usG
Here stand our books the best of friendsK
Here those we love and those who love usG
Are happy that our absence endsK
-
We prize the intellectual treasuresL
On History's famous sites amassedB
And precious are the varied pleasuresL
From Art's great glories of the pastB
-
But well we know when once more seatedM
Within these rooms with volumes linedN
That now the journey is completedM
The best of Rome is in the mindN
