Already 'neath the morning starA
The shrine by Juno's favor blestB
Had flashed its whiteness from afarA
Resplendent on a mountain's crestB
Along whose base the ocean rolledC
A flood of sapphire flecked with goldC
-
In twilight still the shore remainedD
But toiling upward through the nightE
A wistful mother had just gainedD
The summit of the sacred heightE
Where Juno's far famed statue stoodF
Palladium of motherhoodF
-
At her approach the bolts were drawnG
And inward swung the temple gateH
Revealing in the light of dawnG
The marble form immaculateI
The effigy of heaven's queenJ
Sublime beneficent sereneJ
-
Slow moving and with fluttering heartK
The youthful matron onward passedL
To where that masterpiece of artK
Repaid her arduous toil at lastL
As gazing through a mist of tearsM
She realized here the dream of yearsN
-
Beside her one on either handO
Two little children stood in fearP
Unable yet to understandO
The reason of their coming hereQ
Both beautiful in form and faceR
True types of the Hellenic raceR
-
No fairer pilgrims ever cameS
Within the temple's stately doorT
No sweeter picture could it frameS
Than that upon its marble floorT
When in the hush of dawning dayU
The lovely trio knelt to prayU
-
Immortal goddess not in vainV
Do mothers lift their souls to theeW
Their love their hopes their fears their painV
Thy heart can feel thine eyes can seeW
Deign therefore my sweet babes to blessX
O Juno fount of tendernessY
-
To thy divine all seeing eyesZ
The course of every life is clearP
I pray thee note what future liesZ
Before these helpless children hereQ
Then of the gifts by thee possessedB
Give them but one choose thou the bestB
-
She paused and waited for replyA2
While solemn stillness filled the shrineB2
Heard something like a gentle sighA2
Or passing of a breath divineB2
Then saw their eyes like petals closeC2
In death's sweet statue like reposeD2
-
Repose unbroken evermoreT
The world of suffering still unknownE2
Escaping through that peaceful doorT
From every ill life might have shownE2
Heart broken mother cease to weepF2
The best was given them dreamless sleepF2
