From the mountain grayA
It has made its wayA
To my garden green and coolB
And there from the edgeC
Of a rocky ledgeC
Leaps down to a crystal poolB
-
With a plunging flashD
It falls to dashD
That crystal into foamE
And then at a boundF
Slips under groundF
To the lake its final homeE
-
In the morning lightG
In the silent nightG
When the moonlight gems the sceneH
It laughs and singsI
And a light spray flingsI
O'er stately walls of greenH
-
For in and outJ
And round aboutJ
Grow flowers plants and treesK
From the lowly mossL
To the boughs that tossL
Their leaves in the passing breezeK
-
On its outer zoneM
Of massive stoneM
Two marble statues standN
The silver sheenH
Of the pool betweenH
One form on either handN
-
One of the pairO
Is a woman fairO
With parted smiling lipsP
For her each hourQ
A honied flowerQ
And she the bee that sipsP
-
The other a faunH
From whom is goneH
The power to frankly smileR
For whom each dayA
As it drags awayA
Makes life still less worth whileR
-
The face of the oneH
Is like the sunH
With its warmth and light and cheerS
But the faun looks downH
With ugly frownH
And his lips retain a sneerS
-
Youth and ageT
Child and sageT
The former with life unknownH
The latter burntU
By lessons learntU
With a heart now turned to stoneH
-
Yet the torrent speedsV
And never heedsV
The statues' smiles or sneersW
They come and goX
But the water's flowX
Has lasted a thousand yearsW
