Solitude Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHII JKJKLL MNMNII

Had I but lived when music loving PanA
Still played his flute amid the whispering reedsB
When through Arcadian groves the dryads ranA
And symbolizing well man's earlier creedsB
A host of sculptured forms divinely fairC
Portrayed the gods and led men's thoughts to prayerC
-
I would have sought some beautiful retreatD
Remote from cities and the din of menE
Some tranquil shore where lake and forest meetD
By limpid stream or flower lit sylvan glenE
And would have reared where none could e'er intrudeF
A shrine to thee O precious SolitudeF
-
How hath a heedless world neglected theeG
Thou coy divinity too shy and proudH
To sue for followers from those who seeG
Attraction merely in the strenuous crowdH
For only those can know thee as thou artI
Who wisely seek and study thee apartI
-
No rapt enthusiast or mystic sageJ
No Asian founder of a faith divineK
No bard or writer of inspired pageJ
Hath ever failed to worship at thy shrineK
O Nourisher of steadfast self controlL
Of noble thoughts of loftiness of soulL
-
Yet no continuous homage dost thou craveM
No anchorite's seclusion wouldst thou askN
Thou lov'st no misanthrope or sullen slaveM
But only those who faithful to life's taskN
Must yet at times look upward from the clodI
And seek through thee acquaintanceship with GodI
