Out Of The Ranks Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFH AIAJ KLKL MNMN OPOP MAMAFrom the bitter fight I have made my way | A |
To the peaceful crest of a lonely hill | B |
But the noise and heat of the deadly fray | A |
And the smart of wounds are with me still | B |
- | |
No recreant I to a noble cause | C |
Nor traitor base to a leader bold | D |
'Twas a fight where he won most applause | E |
Who captured most of his neighbor's gold | D |
- | |
Where the wounded crawled away to die | F |
Or hopeless ate their bread with tears | G |
And the only cries that rent the sky | F |
Were the shouts of frenzied financiers | H |
- | |
Alas for the prematurely gray | A |
Who struggle there through joyless lives | I |
To win the means of more display | A |
For thankless children thoughtless wives | J |
- | |
Alas for those whose spirits yearn | K |
For leisure books and sunlit fields | L |
Who yet can never pause to learn | K |
The joy that a life of culture yields | L |
- | |
Still sway the mad crowds to and fro | M |
I hear their groans and panting breath | N |
The hideous impacts blow on blow | M |
The moans of those who are crushed to death | N |
- | |
None stoop to lift up those who fall | O |
A thousand leap for a vacant place | P |
Thrust weaker thousands to the wall | O |
And trample many an upturned face | P |
- | |
But I however the fight may go | M |
Have turned my back on the sordid fray | A |
To face the tranquil sunset glow | M |
And hope for the dawn of a better day | A |
