On The Promenade Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHEH IJIJ KLKL

O joyous idler in the sunA
In pity slacken here thy paceB
A lad whose course is nearly runA
Is watching thee with wistful faceB
-
The glow of health upon thy cheekC
The youthful ardor in thy gaitD
Appear to him so frail and weakC
The bitter irony of FateD
-
Thou art to him the vision fairE
Of all he once had hoped to beF
What wonder then that in despairE
His longing glances follow theeF
-
Let not the gulf too deep appearG
Between thy fortune and his ownH
Thou didst not see that falling tearE
Nor hear his low half stifled moanH
-
The pang of age compared with youthI
Or hunger with the spendthrift's wealthJ
Gnaws not with such a cruel toothI
As that of pain confronting healthJ
-
Yet must the strong ship breast the waveK
The wreck lie rotting on the shoreL
O hopes that perish in the graveK
O youthful dreams that come no moreL
