Mesalliance Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIK LMLM NONO

With gentle manners winsome faceA
And forehead fit to wear a crownB
How brilliant might have been her placeA
Had she not mated with a clownB
-
A Caliban of modern dateC
Ill dressed ill shapen ill at easeD
With halting speech and awkward gaitC
And manners certain to displeaseD
-
What secret motive could have ledE
This charming girl her life to stainF
By condescending thus to wedE
A husband whom she must disdainF
-
Far worthier men had vainly soughtG
To win her for herself aloneH
What potent spell could Love have wroughtG
To draw her to a tactless droneH
-
A palace she might well have gracedI
And led its functions like a queenJ
Instead her life has run to wasteI
The wraith of what it might have beenK
-
For boorishness hath brought its blightL
Her rare accomplishments are marredM
And every path with promise brightL
By stupid tyranny is barredM
-
Yet still she bravely moves through lifeN
Ignoring her pathetic fallO
A loveless broken hearted wifeN
Alas the pity of it allO
