Influence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCD EFEFAA GHGHII JKJKLL MNMOII

We know not what mysterious powerA
Lies latent in our words and deedsB
Sweet as the perfume of a flowerA
Strong as the life that sleeps in seedsB
But something certainly survivesC
The passing of our fleeting livesD
-
A look a pressure of the handE
A sign of hope a song of cheerF
May journey over sea and landE
Outliving many a sterile yearF
To find at last the destined hourA
When they shall leap to bud and flowerA
-
We write we print then nevermoreG
To be recalled our thoughts take flightH
Like white winged birds that leave the shoreG
And scattering lose themselves in lightH
For good or ill those words may beI
The arbiters of destinyI
-
Perchance some fervid plea may findJ
A heart to rise to its appealK
Some statement rouse a dormant mindJ
Or stir a spirit quick to feelK
Nay through some note of gentler toneL
Even love may recognize its ownL
-
Fain would I deem not wholly deadM
The spoken words of former yearsN
And every printed page when readM
A source of smiles instead of tearsO
That friends whom I shall never seeI
May for a time remember meI
