In Memoriam G.m.m. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLM FNFN

His letter lies before me hereA
Scarce written ere the hand grew coldB
That traced the lines so fine and clearC
Which still of love and friendship toldB
-
This fragile film of black and whiteD
A traveller over land and seaE
Is all the bond I have to nightD
Between the friend I loved and meE
-
I know not where his form may restF
Yet well I know Death cannot takeG
His memory from the Central WestF
And its proud city by the lakeG
-
But where are now his loyal soulH
His loving heart and gifted mindI
Do they survive a conscious wholeH
The dwelling they have left behindI
-
Beyond this tiny orb we treadJ
Who can the spirit's pathway traceK
Or find a haven for our deadJ
In seas of interstellar spaceK
-
O silent stars that flash and burnL
Across the bridgeless vault of blueM
Ye may receive but ne'er returnL
The dead we sadly yield to youM
-
In vain we urge the old requestF
In vain the darkness we exploreN
Light lie the turf above thy breastF
O friend whom I shall see no moreN
