Friendship Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH EIEI JKJK LMLM NONO DBDB PQPQ

'Tis not in the bitterest woes of lifeA
That the love of friends as a rule grows coldB
Still less does it melt in the heat of strifeA
Or die from the canker of borrowed goldB
-
For pity comes when they see us grievedC
Or forced to lie on a couch of painD
And a hasty word is soon retrievedC
And the loan of money may leave no stainD
-
'Tis oftenest lost through the deadly blightE
Of Society's pestilential airF
Which blackens the robe of purest whiteE
And fouls what once was sweet and fairF
-
An envious woman's whispered wordG
A slander born of a cruel smileH
The repetition of something heardG
The imputation of something vileH
-
Or possibly even a fancied slightE
For a feast declined or a call delayedI
Or jealousy caused by petty spiteE
Or the wish for a higher social gradeI
-
'Tis one or all of these combinedJ
That saps the love of our dearest friendsK
And slowly poisons heart and mindJ
Till the joy of generous friendship endsK
-
Last night they were in a cordial moodL
To day they suddenly seem estrangedM
Shall we then grieve and sadly broodL
O'er the unknown cause that has made them changedM
-
Ask once that they make the matter clearN
But ask no more if the lesson failO
Let changelings go however dearN
And shed no tears for a love so frailO
-
Be not the slave of a friend's migraineD
Nor let him play now hot now coldB
The master of thyself remainD
And the key of thine inmost heart withholdB
-
For they who weep and sue and pleadP
Are used and dropped like a worn out gloveQ
And the friends with moods are the friends who needP
To learn that they are not worth our loveQ
