Dreamland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EAEA FGHG IGIG JKJK LMLM NONO LPLP QRQR

I woke from dreams of rare delightA
And visions of a joyous landB
Where loved ones long since lost to sightA
Walked blithely with me hand in handB
-
Where every brow was free from careC
And Youth's sublime ideals shoneD
Like planets in an Alpine airC
And death's sad mystery was knownD
-
I woke and like a bird that waitsE
Uncertain where to wend its flightA
My spirit lingered at the gatesE
Which close upon that realm of lightA
-
Till slowly all around grew clearF
And once again the light of dayG
Convinced me that I still was hereH
Though all my dreams had passed awayG
-
Once more I faced a world of PainI
Of quivering nerves and sure decayG
Of helpless brutes by millions slainI
To feed mankind a single dayG
-
Of shivering children scarred with blowsJ
Of hunted bird and tortured beastK
Of War whose hideous programme showsJ
Its means of homicide increasedK
-
The same old world of greed and hateL
Of selfish act and paltry aimM
Of private fraud and venal StateL
Of deeds and doers steeped in shameM
-
What marvel if the spirit shrinksN
From plunging in that turbid streamO
Or if on waking thus one thinksN
That life was better in his dreamO
-
Sweet peaceful dreamland I awaitL
The favored hour to pass againP
Within thine asphodelian gateL
Beyond the miseries of menP
-
To find old pleasures long since goneQ
Perchance as vivid as of yoreR
Or else to sleep life's curtains drawnQ
And reawaken nevermoreR
